Behave with coworkers according to the Quran and Sunnah

Behave with coworkers

Those we associate with in the office or at work are our colleagues. We have to stay with them for a long time in search of livelihood. So without a good relationship with them, career will be very difficult. Islam has formulated a very sophisticated policy in this regard as well. Allah the Almighty says about this in the Holy Quran.

Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good, and to relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the neighbor farther away, the companion at your side, the traveler, and those whom your right hands possess. Indeed, Allah does not like those who are self-deluding and boastful.

(Surah An-Nisaa 4:36)

1. The importance of good behavior of superior colleagues with subordinate colleagues

A) The superior colleague is the guardian of the subordinates

Narrated `Abdullah: Allah's Messenger () said, "Everyone of you is a guardian and is responsible for his charges. The ruler who has authority over people, is a guardian and is responsible for them, a man is a guardian of his family and is responsible for them; a woman is a guardian of her husband's house and children and is responsible for them; a slave ('Abu) is a guardian of his master's property and is responsible for it; so all of you are guardians and are responsible for your charges."

B) The superior colleague is the trustee of the subordinates

Our beloved Prophet Muhammad SAW said

It has been narrated on the authority of Abu Dharr who said: I said to the Prophet (): Messenger of Allah, will you not appoint me to a public office? He stroked my shoulder with his hand and said: Abu Dharr, you are weak and authority is a trust. and on the Day of judgment it is a cause of humiliation and repentance except for one who fulfils its obligations and (properly) discharges the duties attendant thereon.

C) To be gentle and kind to subordinates

Our beloved Prophet Muhammad SAW said

It has been reported on the authority of Abd al-Rahman b. Shumasa who said: I came to A'isha to inquire something from her. She said: From which people are you? I said: I am from the people of Egypt. She said: What was the behavior of your governor towards you in this war of yours? I said: We did not experience anything bad from him. If the camel of a man from us died, he would bestow on him a camel. If any one of us lost his slave, he would give him a slave. If anybody was in need of the basic necessities of life, he would provide them with provisions. She said: Behold! the treatment that was meted out to my brother, Muhammad b. Abu Bakr, does not prevent me from telling you what I heard from the Messenger of Allah (). He said in this house of mine: O God, who (happens to) acquire some kind of control over the affairs of my people and is hard upon them-be You hard upon him, and who (happens to) acquire some kind of control over the affairs of my people and is kind to them-be You kind to him.

It has been narrated on the authority of 'Auf b. Malik that the Messenger of Allah () said: The best of your rulers are those whom you love and who love you, who invoke God's blessings upon you and you invoke His blessings upon them. And the worst of your rulers are those whom you hate and who hate you and whom you curse and who curse you. It was asked (by those present): Shouldn't we overthrow them with the help of the sword? He said: No, as long as they establish prayer among you. If you then find anything detestable in them. You should hate their administration, but do not withdraw yourselves from their obedience.

E) Hiring honest counselors and accepting advice

Allah the Almighty said about this

And those who have responded to their lord and established prayer and whose affair is [determined by] consultation among themselves, and from what We have provided them, they spend.

(Surah Ash-Shura 42:38)

Our beloved Prophet Muhammad SAW has said in another hadith

Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin:

The Messenger of Allah () said: When Allah has a good purpose for a ruler, He appoints for him a sincere minister who reminds him if he forgets and helps him if he remembers; but when Allah has a different purpose from that for him. He appoints for him an evil minister who does not remind him if he forgets and does not help him if he remembers.

2. The good behavior of the subordinate co-worker with the superior co-worker

a) Loyalty

Allah the Almighty said about this

O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is the best [way] and best in result.

(Surah An-Nisaa 4:59)

Our beloved Prophet Muhammad SAW has said

It has been narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah () said: It is obligatory for you to listen to the ruler and obey him in adversity and prosperity, in pleasure and displeasure, and even when another person is given (rather undue) preference over you.

b) Not to be disobedient

Our beloved Prophet Muhammad SAW has said in another hadith

It has been narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira that the Holy prophet () said: Whoso obeys me obeys God, and whoso disobeys me disobeys God. Whoso obeys the commander (appointed by me) obeys me, and whoso disobeys the commander disobeys me. The same tradition transmitted by different persons omits the portion: And whose disobeys the commander disobeys me.

You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allah. If only the People of the Scripture had believed, it would have been better for them. Among them are believers, but most of them are defiantly disobedient.

(Surah Al-i'Imran 3:110)

(Surah At-Tauba 9:71)

It is narrated on the authority of Tariq b. Shihab: It was Marwan who initiated (the practice) of delivering khutbah (address) before the prayer on the 'Id day. A man stood up and said: Prayer should precede khutbah. He (Marwan) remarked, This (practice) has been done away with. Upon this Abu Sa'id remarked: This man has performed (his duty) laid on him. I heard the Messenger of Allah as saying: He who amongst you sees something abominable should modify it with the help of his hand; and if he has not strength enough to do it, then he should do it with his tongue, and if he has not strength enough to do it, (even) then he should (abhor it) from his heart, and that is the least of faith.

a) Building brotherhood

The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.

(Surah Al-Hujurat 49:10)

b) Maintain a spirit of cooperation

And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.

(Surah Al-Maidah 5:2)

c)  Abandon selfishness

And [also for] those who were settled in al-Madinah and [adopted] the faith before them. They love those who emigrated to them and find not any want in their breasts of what the emigrants were given but give [them] preference over themselves, even though they are in privation. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful.

(Surah Al-Hashr 59:9)

d) Absolute tolerance

O you who have believed, persevere and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful.

(Surah Al-i'Imran 3:200)
